I want to make an impact on the youth and mobilize movements
that will be forces of good for years to come.
Tobi Shannon has yet to graduate college, but she is already focused on ensuring the next generation of youth is given the opportunity to reach their full potential. During a summer internship in 2014, Tobi worked with Youth Service America to help increase the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people. Following her internship she stayed on to serve on the Global Youth Service Council, continuing the work of making service opportunities available to youth around the world.
“In everything I do, I try to make it service based,” said Tobi. “I want to make an impact on the youth and mobilize movements that will be forces of good for years to come.”
Tobi grew up in a military household, moving from Detroit to Virginia, and then North Carolina. Her military background, coupled with her faith, influenced Tobi's desire to serve and give back, from a young age. She works with her father’s non-profit, Preparing America’s Tomorrow Today, which provides high school students with opportunities to visit colleges and take tours.
She has also given her time to work with She's the First, Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools, and Help and Hope from the Hill, a program she started in Raleigh, North Carolina that delivers toiletries to the homeless.
“We are all living in this world, and everybody has a purpose. I want my purpose to have a social impact,” said Tobi. “I have had a lot of opportunities in my life, and I want to pay it forward.”
Tobi will wrap up her college degree in December at Atlanta-based Spelman College. She recently returned from a semester abroad in Morocco, where she said she learned a lot about how social justice is viewed in other parts of the world. As you might imagine, Tobi likes to travel in her free time as well as read, cook, and dance. Her best friend Kyla is joining her on the cruise!
