I think everybody should be involved. It will make the world a better place. You don’t have to be rich to do good for others.
For Ted Wagner music is more than just notes on a page. It is a passion that encompasses many parts of his life. He is a professional saxophone, flute, and keyboard player who along with his wife Nuala have a made a career of entertaining others through music.
Ted grew up in Chicago. Both his father and grandfather were musicians and he realized from an early age his calling was music. Throughout his childhood he witnessed the volunteer work of his parents in their local community. Ted now lives in South Pasadena, Florida and is using music as a force for good.
“We have always had a band,” said Ted. “At a certain point I realized how much music has given me and I wanted to give the gift of music to others.”
It was when he signed up to volunteer at a local children’s hospital that he was first exposed to music therapy.
“I didn’t know what music therapy was, but it was that day I saw the power music can have, especially with children in bringing joy to their often very hard lives,” said Ted.
The experience left such an impression, he set out to help more children not only in the hospital but also when they returned home. In 2001, he founded the non-profit Music Sweet Music. The organization provides music therapy and the special musical instruments used in music therapy. Music Sweet Music also contracts with specially trained Board-Certified music therapists to treat children with illnesses, diseases and disorders.
Music Sweet Music therapists now have more than 1500 interventions with hospitalized children annually.
“I could never put into words what these kids have meant to me,” said Ted. “A lot of times its end of life and it can help families through a very difficult time.”
When asked why it’s important to give back to others and support your local community Ted said:
“I think everybody should be involved. It will make the world a better place. You don’t have to be rich to do good for others. I don’t believe you are a complete person until you have given back.”
In their spare time Ted and his wife Nuala love to travel. Nuala will be joining him on the cruise.
