It is so important to be one of the many who gives back to elevate my city with dignity.
Jacksonville, FL resident Steffen Strayer has been working to improve his community for the past 20 years. He credits his desire to help others to his grandmother, who always seemed to derive the most pleasure from serving her community. Steffen is a volunteer with United Way of Northeast Florida, where he works to help some of the most vulnerable individuals in his community.
“I have the opportunity to work with our community agencies, partner companies, clients, and volunteers on projects and events that expand on the work of United Way of Northeast Florida,” says Steffen. “I get to work in the office creating materials that help our community agencies and volunteers understand our systems and use them to greater benefit. I like interacting with our clients; they have the most interesting and compelling stories to tell and the most love to share.”
United Way of Northeast Florida provides diverse and comprehensive services to help elevate members of the community from poverty. They work to provide basic needs, quality education, and financial services to the community with dignity. United Way believes residents, no matter their socioeconomic status, should have access to basic needs such as safe housing, adequate food, and access to health care. The non-profit has helped hundreds of thousands of people living in Northeast Florida.
“Providing service in my community gives me the chance to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who inspired me and continues to do so,” says Steffen. “My community leaders and activists are so impressive, they compel me to want to give of all the gifts I’ve been given. "It is so important to be one of the many who gives back to elevate my city with dignity.”
Before volunteering with United Way of Northeast Florida, Steffen donated his time to the American Red Cross, helping victims of house fires begin their recovery. He’s also volunteered with local pet rescues and the county school district.
When Steffen isn’t volunteering, he enjoys reading fiction and non-fiction, comedies and biographies. His favorite Cabot cheese is Seriously Sharp Cheddar. Steffen’s wife Martina will be joining him on the cruise.
