I just like helping people. It makes me feel good to volunteer.
Joan Stocker is a dedicated volunteer who shares her time and talent with Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County. She delivers meals twice weekly to the home-bound elderly and people with disabilities. Her husband Ron is also quite active in volunteering and joins her regularly. Joan started with Meals on Wheels in 1982 and some 35 years later continues to give her time.
“Volunteering just makes the world a better place,” said Joan. “Whatever we can do to make people’s lives better, it is worth it. All those little acts of help add up and make the world better.”
Now for the stats: Joan has driven over 15,200 miles and contributed 4,500 volunteer hours to Meals on wheels! She has made over 25,000 house visits and delivered more than 50,000 meals and counting!
Joan and her husband also help as Snow Squad members, filling in for volunteers who cancel because of winter weather. They also help pack blizzard bags, which are provided to all clients in advance of winter weather to ensure they have food on hand in case of cancellation. In 2013, Joan also began volunteering with the newly created Market on Wheels program, serving as a shopper for people unable to get their own groceries.
In her spare time, Joan enjoys being as active as she can with her husband Ron, who will be joining her on the cruise!
