It’s out there every day. You don’t have to travel too far from your house to find
people in need. There are people to meet, stories to share, and work to do.
Ed Stone says he is blessed with many hats to wear, and he isn’t about to waste any of them. The son of a military sergeant, Ed helps where he is needed. You could call him the handyman of community service. House repairs, lawn care, transporting those in need, donating food for fundraisers, or supporting Meals on Wheels, Ed gives his time when and where it is needed - all you have to do is call him and ask.
“The world can be a selfish place, and I don’t like that,” said Ed. “If everybody did a little bit, nobody would have to do a lot. There has to be good people out there to help better our society.”
Opportunities to serve his neighbors often fall right into Ed's lap. Most recently, while he was at a coffee shop, a car broke down right in front of him. The couple inside didn’t know what to do. Ed diagnosed the problem, purchased the parts, and sent them back on their way in no time.
“Acts are facts, and that there is a fact,” said Ed. “It’s out there every day. You don’t have to travel too far from your house to find people in need. There are people to meet, stories to share, and work to do. I just try to do what I can.”
Ed often lends a hand to widows who are struggling after the loss of a spouse. He utilizes his background as a builder to help taek care of things around the house. One of those widows saw Common Kindness asking for Cabot Community Celebrity nominations, and immediately signed up Ed. When the phone call came, he was quite surprised and went to the internet to figure out if he was being scammed. He said he has since taken her and her family to dinner to express his thanks.
Ed credits his wife, Robin, with being a positive force in his life. He says she motivates him and helps him with community service, and he couldn't do what he does without her. They have two daughters and three grandchildren. Ed also loves to hunt, fish, farm, and keep bees in his spare time. Robin will join Ed on the cruise.
