Volunteering is about giving back. You may not have the money to donate to an organization, but you can find the time.
Diane Toyos of Bellefonte, PA has been volunteering for Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania for the past 12 years. She started out as her oldest daughter’s Troop Cookie Manager, helping the girls raise money for a trip to Washington, D.C. Diane is now managing cookie sales for all 22 troops in her Service Unit, and also serves in a number of other leadership roles within the organization.
“I was a Girl Scout for about four years as a young girl,” says Diane. “I remember all of the cool things we did, and I want all of our girls to have the same experiences I did. I wish I could remember my troop leader’s name so I could contact her and thank her for having such a great impact on my life.”
Girl Scouts was founded more than 100 years ago by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia. Today, Girl Scouts honors her vision and legacy by building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place through badge work, community service, STEM activities and the great outdoors.
“During my 12 years volunteering with Girl Scouts, I have been the Troop Cookie Manager for about 8 years, Service Unit Cookie Manager for 10 years, Troop Leader for 8 years, a Regional Delegate to our council for 6 years and Service Unit Leader for 7 years,” says Diane. “I also volunteer for recruitment activities and have been Program Director for seven weekend-themed camping events. Currently, I am on a committee to hire a new CEO for our council. I seem to be the person our local troop leaders come to for advice and am also someone our council board members and staff come to for insights into our other volunteers.”
In addition to her work with the Girl Scouts, Diane has also raised two dogs for The Seeing Eye Foundation.
Diane is the costume shop manager for Penn State University. When she isn’t volunteering, she enjoys spending time in her vegetable garden, canning and freezing her produce, cooking, crafting, decorating and traveling to Disney World.
