Volunteering forces you to recognize that there is more out there than you and your needs. It’s a great way to get out of your comfort zone, see different perspectives, learn about other people’s needs and help them.
Christina Hansen grew up in Wisconsin and in 2006 enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Korean linguist. She has been stationed and lived in various parts of the country ever since, eventually meeting her husband in Arizona. Christina went on to get her law degree and her husband remains active duty in the United States Public Health Service.
They now live in Bethesda, Maryland and upon moving to the community, Christina set out to find a place to volunteer her time. She found the Red Cross Office at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Christina spends every Monday and Tuesday supporting patients, families, volunteers, staff and donors. She greets all who come through the door, delivers comfort items to patients, supports the Coffee Morning Program, and directly supports the Volunteer Program helping to facilitate donor relationships. In the last year alone Christina has given 370 volunteer hours to Water Reed.
“It is humbling to see patients who find themselves at Walter Reed during the lowest of low moments in their life,” said Christina. “But I find the building is full of hope and patients seem to have such positive attitudes and are so focused on tomorrow being better than the day before. It is inspiring.”
In her spare time Christina and her husband love golfing. They also enjoy trying new and varied local craft beers. Due to her husband being active duty he will not be able to join, so Christina will be accompanied by her lifelong friend Tracy on the cruise. We hope they enjoy meeting all the Cabot Celebrities and learn about logging their volunteer time with Reward Volunteers.
