It’s hard to explain exactly how I got here, but Operation Beautiful went viral, and it shows the joy and the encouragement the online community can give to one another.
Caitlin grew up in Miami and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006. She worked as a technical writer in the housing industry for a couple of years before going back to school and founding, almost by accident, Operation Beautiful.com. Caitlin's husband Kristien is a practitioner of functional medicine and owns a holistic medical practice. He and their son Henry will join Caitlin on the cruise.
One day a few years back, Caitlin was feeling down and wanted to quiet her inner voices. So she wrote a simple comment on a post-it note and placed it on her mirror. She took a picture of that note, which said only "You are beautiful," and posted it on her website and blog. Caitlin then asked her readers to participate, and the response went viral. Caitlin was as astonished as anybody at the magnitude of the response, and a new career was born.
Since that time, Caitlin has engaged with the online community to encourage people to lift up their spirits as well as those around them. This often took the form of people writing creative notes and forwarding them to Caitlin who in turn would post them on her website. Notes could be found on lockers, in chalk on sidewalks, in restaurants, and anywhere you can imagine. Caitlin published these notes on her website and wrote about positive energy and doing things to help others in her blog. She amassed an army of followers, and the message went viral. Caitlin has appeared on The Today Show, the Oprah Winfrey Network, in countless magazine and newspaper articles, and on many radio interviews. Says Caitlin: "The online community often gets a bad rap for making hideous and anonymous personal attacks on people.
In this case, however, they are spreading positive energy and uplifting people all over the world. It is incredibly gratifying to see Operation Beautiful take on this life of its own." When not blogging or working on her website, Caitlin can be found at churches, high schools, colleges, and other organizations across the country giving inspirational talks to adoring crowds.
