Dairy farming has been in the Freund’s blood for several generations. The father-daughter duo of Matt and Amanda Freund are the first Cabot farmers to sail on the Community Celebrity Cruise and they are excited to meet all the wonderful volunteers onboard.
Matt and his brother Ben run Freund Farm, but it is truly a family operation. Amanda and her two siblings help with different parts of the business as do Ben’s children. Amanda oversees feeding the 300 Holstein cows each morning and marketing their CowPots product.
What are CowPots? They reuse cow manure turning the solids into planting pots for gardens. Once planted the nutrient rich pot eventually breaks down in the soil. The Freund’s focus on sustainable practices on the farm has won them numerous national awards over the years.
The Freund’s, like many of the farm families who own Cabot, are also very focused on their local community.
“I think it’s very important to work to be a part of your local community,” said Matt. “When you help support others, they will be there to support you in your time of need. “
“Community connection is just a part of life,” Amanda added. “It’s how we were raised. Connecting with your neighbors and being there for your neighbors is incredibly important.”
Amanda gives much of her time helping others understand the dairy farming industry and educating the next generation of farmers on how to best tell their story, whether on Facebook or at a town hall meeting. The family runs Freund's Farm Market & Bakery where customers can come to buy home grown vegetables and Cabot Cheese. The Freund’s regularly open their doors to welcome visitors and give tours of the farm as well as practice “Random Acts of Cheddar” at local firehouses to thank firefighters for what they do.
Be sure to take some time to say hello and speak with the Freunds! They represent the 1,100 farm families who own Cabot and their commitment to community is why Cabot’s volunteerism programs exist!
