We give our time because of the care we received in our time of need. I think if you have the opportunity to give back, you must to do it.
Upon the birth of their first child Victoria, Steven and Ramona Reed were surprised to learn she was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and needed to be transferred to the NICU at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital. Little did they know that an intense moment of worry for their child, would soon nurture a passion for helping other children.
“We are so blessed to have this amazing children’s hospital and ones like it around the country,” said Ramona. “We didn’t know this was going to happen and the hospital made it so we didn’t have to worry about anything. We are fortunate that we live in an amazing community.”
Victoria, who is now 12 and her brother Otis, who is nine were both patients of the children’s hospital. As those early years passed, the Reed family became tireless volunteers, advocates, and champions of not only the Vermont hospital but for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country.
It started with collecting change in conjunction with local radio fundraisers for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In those first years, the family raised a few hundred dollars. Each year they raise more and more, with numbers now reaching into the thousands of dollars. Victoria has a goal of raising $30,000 dollars this year alone!
In 2013, Victoria was recognized not only for her fundraising but her time spent volunteering by being chosen to represent the UVM Children’s Hospital as a “champion” to the national Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
“We give our time because of the care we received in our time of need,” said Ramona. “Our children and our experiences drive us and motivate us. It’s made our kids who they are now. I think if you have the opportunity to give back, you must to do it.”
The Reed family lives in Alburgh, Vermont which is up along the Canadian border. Steve works on a dairy farm, and because of that in the last ten years the family has taken just 16 days off as a family. They say they are so looking forward to the cruise and meeting their fellow celebrities. They also decided to make it a family trip and will be bring along Victoria and Otis!
