When you are lucky enough to have had a good life, making a difference and helping others is only right.
Don’t let Melvin aka Mel fool you, he has been a volunteer throughout his long career with Johnson & Johnson. The company encouraged volunteerism and Mel excelled at giving time to others, organizing blood drives, savings programs and even started a foundation for those in need in neighboring communities.
“You have to give back. When you are lucky enough to have had a good life, making a difference and helping others is only right. Besides, after retirement I had to stay busy,” said Mel.
Since retiring 11 years ago, most of his time has been given to Palm Beach County’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program run by United Way. Mel has given almost 2,000 hours of his time helping to file 1,500 tax returns for qualified households earning less than $50,000 a year. Mel helps them toward financial stability and self-sufficiency by guiding each client to take full advantage of IRS credits for Child Care and Earned Income.
Mel’s goal is to help each person keep more money in his or her pocket.
Mel also volunteers in the Caridad Center after-school program. The Caridad Center is a charitable organization dedicated to upgrading the health, education and living standards of underserved children and families in Florida's Palm Beach County. Mel has been mentoring grammar school age children in Caridad's after-school program for 11 years devoting two afternoons per week helping youngsters in the 2nd and 3rd grades with their school assignments.
"Working with these youngsters and seeing their amazing improvement over the school year is what makes this extra effort so worthwhile."
Mel also volunteers with the Center’s free dental clinic for underserved and migrant families. The mission is to upgrade the health, education and living standards of the clients they serve.
Mel will be traveling with his lovely bride of 62 years, Helen (official spelling) – Helyn adopted, lyrical spelling. She has lots to say about family and friends built over a lifetime together. We hope that the Alaskan Cruise is among her highlights and a small token of thanks for Mel’s lifetime of doing good for others.
