The right place, the right time, and the right reason.
Sometimes you just know things are going to come together.
2010 and 2012 Celebrity Cruise Honoree
Kellie is no stranger to the Cabot Community Celebrity Cruise. In addition to being honored in 2010, Kellie has joined Cabot on two other cruises as a Celebrity Ambassador and now joins us as an alumna.
The victim of stranger rape over twenty years ago, Kellie refused to let that single, horrific event define her in society's eyes. Resisting the urge to turn inward, she founded SOAR®, Speaking Out About Rape, and started leading conferences on healing and coping with rape trauma. Instead of living in silent shame, through SOAR's efforts rape survivors everywhere are finding the strength and courage to face their trauma and move on
She also co-authored the Florida Sexual Predator Prosecution Act of 2000 and was instrumental in developing the national protocol for sexual assault forensic exams. Kellie is recognized throughout the country as a leading spokesperson on coping with the aftermath of rape.
Kellie says she thinks of herself as more of an activist than an advocate. Early in the legal process following her rape, Kellie began to identify failings and shortcomings in the legal system. So she went to work to right those wrongs, working with local and national leaders like Attorney General John Ashscroft, whom Kellie told that we as a nation are finally making progress helping younger generations more willingly report the crime of rape, and to get back to living their lives.
Kellie was involved with AG Ashcroft and John Walsh's announcement of the DNA initiative, which provided funding to eliminate the DNA backlog, and train criminal justice professionals about forensic DNA. Working with people who have done so much to help victims of rape is one of Kellie's proudest achievements. Her tireless efforts have truly made a difference in the lives of thousands of women. For that, we salute Kellie and all she does to make the world a better place!
