I think God has a plan for everybody, and my place is right here at Trinity High School. I love what I do, and I wouldn’t trade my life with any other person in the world.
Charles was raised in HattiesburgHattiesburg, Mississippi but left for Dallas at the age of 17 to attend college. He met and fell in love with Ellen while in college, and when she moved back to Fort Worth, he followed her there, and they soon married. That was 44 years ago. Charles and Ellen have one son and two foster daughters they raised and love as their own. One daughter graduated from Texas A&M University, and his son from Alcorn State. The second daughter will be attending college in the fall. Ellen will join Charles on the cruise.
Charles is the head custodian at Trinity High School in Euless, Texas, and he calls it "the best place in the world." He initially drove trucks for a number of years but didn't like being away from home so much. He took the job at Trinity thinking he would work there for a bit until something better came along. He's been there now for 24 years. Charles was nominated by Trinity's principal for the Life Changer of the Year Awardfor the years he has spent mentoring youngsters and helping at-risk kids find a better way. Down to earth and plain spoken, Charles encourages the kids to work hard, stay in school, and follow their dreams. He has boxes of letters from countless Trinity graduates over the years thanking him for reaching out and taking the time to help them when they needed it the most. Because of his sense of optimism and ability to reach the kids, Charles has been the go-to guy for the past two decades at the school.
As a humble man who never seeks recognition for his service, Charles is quick to say "this award could have gone to many others at the school who deserve it as much as me. I was just the lucky one to be selected." In addition to turning around the lives of many troubled youths at Trinity High School and preaching the value of hard work, Charles mentors children in his neighborhood and is always available when they need a helping hand or some tough love. Along the way, he has also been a volunteer coach for local football squads.
